What’s New?
As a freelance San Francisco copywriter, I’ve been so busy writing other clients’ projects over the past six months that I haven’t updated my own newsletter lately. So here’s what I’ve been working on since last fall:
- Healthcare copywriting: a multi-media branding campaign for an orthopedic center in the Midwest with a website, TV, radio, print ads, outdoor and YouTube videos.
- TV copywriting for my advertising consulting firm.
- Financial copywriting for an East Coast bank – one of five collaborating on a 150-page site.
- Web copywriting/editing for a social media colleague: Surefire Online Marketing.
- Web copywriting for a San Francisco immigration attorney.
- Healthcare radio copywriting for a hearing aid franchise in the Northwest.
- Financial copywriting for case studies and email marketing campaigns for Intuit PaymentNetwork.
- Healthcare copywriting for ads, radio, TV and a 30-page webstire for a clinical research group.
- Website copywriting for a San Francisco IT consultant: Bridge to Bridge Technologies.
- Website copywriting for a recording studio/voice talent: Speed of Sound Audio Production.
- Animated banner copywriting for the World Golf Hall of Fame in Florida.
- Healthcare copywriting for a San Francisco hypnotherapist: Kay Heatherly.
- Freelance blog copywriting for http://www.experian.com/blogs/news/, GroupPrice.com/blog, and http://mdveinprofessionals.com/blog/

Recycled Creativity
As a Certified Green Bay Area Business, I took a pledge to reduce my carbon footprint by using recycled products and services wherever possible. To that end, I’m recycling some of my past successes as a freelance copywriter in each of these newsletters.
Here’s an example: The English Grill, St. Francis Hotel, San Francisco
When I worked for Grey Advertising, I wrote this ad for a special British food promotion for The English Grill restaurant at the fabled St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco. They were featuring all types of English food. The body copy read: “From June 2nd through the 14th, British chef David McDonald will present what makes Britain great. He’ll prepare authentic dishes, such as Chilled Potted Shrimps, Mussel Brose, Steak and Kidney Pie, Scottish Trifle, fine English cheeses, and much more… “ You could also win a free round-trip for two to London just for dropping off your business card at the restaurant. An alternate headline for this ad was: “For a fortnight, we humbly present cold fish and warm beer”.
This was one of the few ads that I now look at and think that their logo could actually have been bigger, which is a constant battle with clients. Download English Grill PDF.
A Recent Success Story
As mentioned above, I recently wrote the copy and managed a complete campaign for a large orthopedic clinic in the Midwest.
It included: An 80-page website (I wrote 40 pages and managed the rest), 2 TV spots, 4 radio commercials, a print ad campaign, several outdoor boards, and a gorgeous 24-page brochure highlighting their eight orthopedic units. The front cover is shown above.
Humor Is A Funny Thing
How To Use Social Media — I think this is a hiliariously simple explanation across the most popular social media.
Also, Amazingly Simple Home Remedies sent to me by my sick-humored friend in Dallas, Mr. Ed “Special Ed” Henckel, Jr.:
1. Avoid cutting yourself when slicing vegetables by getting someone else to hold the vegetables while you chop.
2. Avoid arguments with the females about lifting the toilet seat by using the sink.
3. For high blood pressure sufferers – simply cut yourself and bleed for a few minutes, thus reducing the pressure on your veins. Remember to use a timer.
4. A mouse trap placed on top of your alarm clock will prevent you from rolling over and going back to sleep after you hit the snooze button.
5. If you have a bad cough, take a large dose of laxatives. Then, you’ll be too afraid to cough.
6. You only need two tools in life – WD40 and duct tape. If it doesn’t move and should, use the WD-40. If it shouldn’t move and does, use the duct tape.
7. If you can’t fix it with a hammer, you’ve got an electrical problem.
Ads I Like
This print ad for Rowenta Vacuums has such an arresting visual that it needed no copy.

Why I Love Referrals
During 2011, over 70% of my revenue came from referrals through Business Network International chapters in North America. The majority of my income came from my colleagues at BNI Embarcadero, the largest word-of-mouth referral chapter on the West Coast. BNI Embarcadero meets every Wednesday from 715 – 9am at L’Olivier French Restaurant, 465 Davis Court (between Washington and Jackson Streets), San Francisco, CA 94111. If you’d like to join us for a meeting, please contact me.
By the way, the Intuit Small Business Blog and several other recent Intuit projects were all the result of one referral that a friend of mine at BNI saw on Craig’s List.
